2008 TWU Scholarship Winners Announced

TWU Local 556 is proud to announce this year's winners of the Paul Gaynor Scholarship and the Shanna M. Martin Memorial Scholarship.

Brother Paul Gaynor served as the TWU International Representative for Local 556 from our charter in 1981 to his retirement in 1994. During that time, he worked closely with six Executive Boards, and helped to negotiate every Contract in our Local's history prior to his retirement.  Education was one of Brother Gaynor's primary concerns, so in 1998, the TWU Local 556 Executive Board created the Paul Gaynor Scholarship in Brother Gaynor's honor.  Each year it is awarded to one of our Local's Members based on their capacity for Leadership, growth, active Union involvement, and commitment to the Labor Movement.  Brother Gaynor passed away on Sunday, October 5, this year, so it makes awarding this scholarship in his name that much more meaningful this year.  We are honored to announce that the recipient of the 2008 Paul Gaynor Scholarship is MDW Flight Attendant Ka'Ryn Snow.  Look for more information on Ka'Ryn in an upcoming publication.  Congratulations Ka'Ryn.

The TWU Local 556 Shanna M. Martin Memorial Scholarship was established in honor of Shanna M. Martin, the late wife of 3-term Executive Board Member Stacy Martin.  Shanna was diagnosed with cancer in October, 2002 a few months after the birth of their son, Kendon.  In spite of the hardships faced by their family, Shanna encouraged Stacy to continue his Union work, and even during her illness, she supported our Contract 2002 campaign by attending many events.  Shanna lost her battle with cancer in October, 2005, but her spirit of support lives on through Stacy and their son Kendon.  The Shanna M. Martin Memorial Scholarship is awarded to immediate family members of TWU Local 556 Members, and the recipient is selected based on the applicant's support for their family member in the capacity of a TWU Local 556 Member and as a Southwest Airlines Flight Attendant.  We are pleased to announce that this year's recipient of the Shanna M. Martin Memorial Scholarship is Chandler Hill, son of Houston Flight Attendant Jana Hill.  Look for more information on Chandler in an upcoming publications.  Congratulations Chandler.
